Who is Toby Aromolaran? Meet Love Island 2021 contestant who is a footballer for Hashtag United

It’s reality TV Christmas tonight, as Love Island fans prepare to watch the cast of the 2021 series enter the Majorca villa.

After almost 18 months away from screens, this series is perhaps the most highly anticipated yet. The Love Island 2021 contestant line-up include a civil servant in the Department for Transport, a fashion blogger and a PE teacher.

Contestant Toby Aromolaran is set to join Love Island’s footballing hall of fame, alongside Winter series winner (and former Oxford City FC player) Finley Tapp and popular 2019 star Jack Fowler.

But will Toby’s sporting brain give him the upper hand in the new series? Let’s get to know him better.

Toby Aromolaran – Key Facts

Age: 22

Job: Semi-pro footballer

From: Essex

Why does Toby want to take part in Love Island?

“I’ve never been in a relationship. I thought, ‘If Love Island can’t find me a relationship then no one can’.” While he is correct that he will be in a good place to find a match, we have to wonder whether he considered giving something like Tinder a crack first?

As for what the girls will make of his lack of relationship experience, Toby isn’t worried. “Surely it’s like a learning curve, I’m just learning on the job!” he laughs, adding that having sex on the show is at the back of his mind. “First, I’m just focused on getting a girl,” he says. “Before thinking about what happens next.”

He should be a good character to have around if anyone in the villa needs a cheer up with Toby saying: “I always see the bright side in the worst situations. I’m a fun guy when I go on a night out. Responsible guy as well.”

What does Toby do for work?

If you have never heard of Essex-based semi-pro club Hashtag United, you should probably look them up, as playing for them is a job that Toby loves. “I’ve played football since I was about six, but it’s really come into a new light for the past year since I joined a team called Hashtag United. They’re very social media focused. Everything is on YouTube, Instagram and Twitter. Playing with them has really made me fall in love with the game again.”

And being a footballer has given Toby a competitive edge. “Personally, I’m a winner. I play football, which is a competitive sport. It’s not just a game. It’s for the position and the team. I’ve been competing my whole life. I’m a winner, I don’t like losing. I’m not a sore loser but I like to win.”

Will he get back on the pitch after a summer in the spotlight? “In my head at the moment, I want to go back to football – I’m missing it already,” he says. “But I’m also open to anything that could possibly come.”

What do his family and teammates think about him starring on the show?

Toby says his place on the show was only confirmed at the last minute, and his family and friends have rallied round to help him prepare. “My family and friends are so supportive,” he says. “The moment I told them, everyone was just rushing just to help me out before I flew off, because I’ve been told very late.”

For the short period of time that the 22-year-old knew that he was going on the show before flying out to Spain, he had to keep his news a secret from his teammates. “It was kind of funny,” he says. “Like my teammates will be talking about ‘Oh Love Island’s coming on soon’, and I was just there looking at them like ‘Yeah Love Island’s coming soon!’”

“I can’t imagine what they’re saying now,” he adds. “I would love to be a fly on the wall.”

What is Toby looking for in a partner?

“Looks-wise, I’m a sucker for a cute face. Nice feet. That’s a dealbreaker for me. I don’t have a foot fetish but I appreciate nice feet! I think you can judge someone by their feet. Girls who walk around at the club with no shoes on, that’s one of my hates.”
