WandaVision season 2 release date: Will the Marvel series return to Disney Plus?

The WandaVision finale is now available to stream on Disney Plus (with our spoiler-filled WandaVision review recapping all the action), bringing an end to one of the strangest chapters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date.

While there are plenty more comic book streaming shows on the way this year, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier later this month, fans are already wondering whether Wanda Maximoff’s surreal starring vehicle could return.

No doubt many would welcome the idea as WandaVision has been a popular topic on social media over the past two months, where viewers have discussed and celebrated all the big moments.

Despite its success, the future remains uncertain for Marvel’s first Disney Plus release, with its story directly linked to an upcoming blockbuster movie – but here you’ll find all the details we have so far.

Will WandaVision be renewed for season 2?

At this point, it’s unclear whether WandaVision could get a second season as Marvel boss Kevin Feige has recently confirmed the show’s unresolved plot threads will be picked up in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

As a result, we can’t be sure whether a second season of WandaVision will even be possible until we see how that movie plays out and where it leaves the heroes of the MCU.

However, WandaVision does appear to be a special case in this regard, as Feige went on to explain that some of the other Disney Plus shows will follow a more conventional run of sequential seasons.

“Some of the shows that I mentioned that we are about to start filming, we are keeping in mind a structure that would lead into a season two or a season three in a more direct way compared to a show like WandaVision which clearly goes into a feature,” he said during Disney’s presentation at the Television Critics Association.

Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean another season of WandaVision is completely off the table.

Feige added: “I’ve been at Marvel for too long to say a definite no or a definite yes to anything.”

If Marvel Studios did want to continue exploring the life of the Scarlet Witch on the small screen, it’s possible they could move on from sitcom homages to an entirely different Wanda-centric story.

This is because, narratively speaking, it would be difficult to find a justification for placing the character in yet another comedic illusion after she dismantled the last one herself.

WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer has also kept quiet when asked about the possibility of a second season, telling The Hollywood Reporter that it’s “not something that can be discussed” just yet.

“It was always the design with these shows that they feel like a run of a comic,” she added. “In that way, it feels very complete. It’s an emotional completion I stand by and feel great about and always was very much baked in.”

WandaVision season 2 release date

If there were to be a second season of WandaVision, it probably wouldn’t arrive on Disney Plus for quite some time.

Elizabeth Olsen is currently busy filming her pivotal role in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel, which is scheduled for release on 25th March 2022.

Depending on where that movie leaves Wanda Maximoff, another streaming show could well be a possibility, but Marvel Studios would want to give fans plenty of time to get caught up before they dropped the next chapter in her story.

For that reason, RadioTimes.com predicts that any potential second season of WandaVision would not be released until January 2023 at the very earliest.

WandaVision season 2 theories

WandaVision

The WandaVision finale was a little more conclusive than expected. (This is your official spoiler warning.)

Some fans had speculated a huge cliffhanger setting the stage for Doctor Strange 2 – and perhaps even a cameo appearance from the Sorcerer Supreme himself – but alas, neither turned out to be true.

Instead, we got a relatively neat resolution to the events of the Hex, with the citizens of Westview finally released from their captive state and Wanda exiling herself to a remote cabin in the wilderness.

There she is shown to be studying from the Darkhold, a sinister text that holds within it information which could help Wanda master her powers – and maybe even bring back her family.

Indeed, in the WandaVision post-credits scene, we briefly hear Wanda’s twin sons calling for help, which suggests that they still exist somewhere in the Marvel multiverse despite the Hex being destroyed.

That will be exciting for comic book fans, as Wanda and Vision’s children grow up to become the teen superheroes Wiccan and Speed in the source material, both being prominent members of the Young Avengers.

The arrival of the youth-oriented superhero team seems imminent after some telling recent casting announcements, including Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop and Kathryn Newton as Cassie Lang.

Therefore, it’s likely the characters of Billy and Tommy will reappear elsewhere in some capacity, although it’s possible the current child actors could be replaced by older choices.

The series has also introduced a number of other intriguing new details to the MCU, particularly regarding Wanda’s powers originating from chaos magic and the fragile control she wields over them.

Expect more reality-warping antics in the near future and we wouldn’t be surprised if Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness also made a return, given how popular she proved to be with viewers.

If WandaVision did get renewed for season two, Elizabeth Olsen would presumably reprise her role of Wanda Maximoff, while Paul Bettany could also return as the whereabouts of so-called White Vision are currently unknown.

Teyonah Parris has impressed fans in her debut appearance as Monica Rambeau, but she seems less likely to return to the series, as its post-credits scene instead sets up her appearance in the upcoming Captain Marvel 2.

However, we could see allies Darcy Lewis and Jimmy Woo return, played by Kat Dennings and Randall Park respectively, given they aren’t currently committed to any other MCU projects and they’ve been such a popular team among fans.

As previously mentioned, if Wanda’s super-powered kids were to be brought back, it’s likely by that point they would need to be played by two older actors so expect a recast.

Fans will be relieved that Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness did make it out of the first season alive, albeit trapped in the form of nosey neighbour Agnes.

Still, it’s quite possible that Wanda, Doctor Strange or another prominent figure in the magical community could seek her out at some point in the future and restore her mind.

It seems less likely that Evan Peters will return given that his Fake Pietro (AKA Fietro) was revealed to be simply a burned out Westview resident by the name of Ralph Bohner. Seriously.
