Tiger Woods accepts share of blame as USA’s Ryder Cup fightback falls flat | Sean Ingle

The American legend won the Tour Championship a week earlier but was disconsolate after winning no points in America’s heavy defeat by Europe

As the boozy cries of ‘Ole! Ole!’ reverberated around Le Golf National on Sunday night a sullen Tiger Woods offered a brutal assessment of his own performance in America’s 17 ½-10½ defeat. “I’m one of the contributing factors to why we lost the Ryder Cup, and it’s not a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s disappointing because I went 0-4, and that’s four points to the European team.”

It is now 25 years since the US have won in Europe, yet for the briefest moments during the afternoon they allowed themselves to entertain the impossible despite starting the day 10-6 behind. Jim Furyk’s side were ahead in four of the opening six singles and tied in two others, and Tiger was on the prowl. It turned out to be the cruellest of illusions. The final score of 17½-10½ was the third widest margin by a European team.
