The German chancellor is facing rebellion within her government despite a raft of new measures
Questions around Europe’s handling of migration and asylum applications continued to cause a political headache on Sunday night as the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, sought to calm tensions with conservative allies inside her coalition government.
After the European Union last week hammered out a vague accord on migration, promising to set up secure centres to process the asylum claims of people rescued in the Mediterranean, Merkel drew up her own raft of measures to tighten controls on the influx of migrants to Germany and presented it to her sceptical coalition partners, the conservative Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU).
