When a country’s self-esteem is shattered on the pitch, race usually plays a part in the search for scapegoats

Last month, two German-born Premier League footballers of Turkish descent, Mesut Özil and Ilkay GündoÄŸan, posed for photos with the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan, while he was in London. GündoÄŸan, who has both a German and a Turkish passport, signed his shirt: “To my president, with my respects.”
